Massage

Relaxation

Relaxation massage is the traditional form of massage used in western culture. It utilizes Swedish massage techniques to promote relaxation, healthy circulation, better sleep patterns, pain relief and a sense well-being. The massage consists of the therapist applying gentle to medium pressure of the hands to the body, gently manipulating the tissue to promote relaxation. It is not a deep tissue massage. It is not designed for working the deeper muscles of the body, but just a gentle kneading and rubbing of the outer layers of the body tissue. It will cover a wide range of areas on the body including the back, legs, arms and neck.

During a session, the patient will remove most of their clothing and lie on a massage table with a light sheet and/or blanket draped over the body. Usually a relaxation massage can be modified and tailored to your specific desires.  Sometimes there is the option of adding some aromatherapy treatment to heighten the holistic experience of the massage. The massage takes place in a quiet, comforting environment, with your choice of any music or candlelight in the background. Many live their stressful lives day to day without taking any time off just for them.  A wise man once said, " You will spend time, money and energy to be well or time money and energy to be sick".  We hope you will choose wellness.  You can start by booking you appointment today!

Oncology

Oncology Massage is massage designed for those who have cancer or have had cancer. It differs from regular massage in that it is specifically and exclusively comfort oriented massage. What that means is that while many techniques may be utilized, all are used with specific client concerns addressed as needed by the therapist. There are still instances where massage is not advised (contraindicated), but for the most part it is thought to bring aid and comfort to a group of people that suffer greatly with a debilitating and life threatening illness. Oncology massage is a specialized field of bodywork. Those who have cancer or have had cancer and desire massage should seek out those persons trained specifically in Oncology massage as well as Manual Lymph Drainage. Cancer patients and health workers report the following benefits at almost every stage of the illness:

•  Increased feelings of well-being and normalcy

•  Decreased sense of isolation

•  Positive social interaction

•  Faster wound and scar healing

•  Decreased pain medication

•  Promote bowel activity (in some cases relief from constipation or diarrhea)

•  Decrease in edema and lymph edema due to improved blood and lymph circulation

•  Relief from muscle soreness due to test procedures and prolonged bed rest

•  Helps prevent pressure sores

•  Reduced symptoms cancer treatment side effects such as fatigue and nausea

•  Decreased length of hospital stay

Bamboo Fusion

Innovative as it is practical, Bamboo Fusion massage provides a deep tissue massage using the versatility of heated bamboo. Various sizes of bamboo and rattan are heated to a comfortable 110 degrees and used to warm the tissues literally rolling away aches and pains. Are you looking for deep tissue massage? Here is a wonderful way to get that deep tissue feel without the soreness that can often accompany traditional deep tissue massage. Each piece of Bamboo or rattan is carefully hand-crafted and shaped to glide smoothly over the body. If you like deep tissue massage, you are going to LOVE this new modality!

Is Bamboo Fusion massage right for you? While Bamboo Fusion massage can be preformed on a variety of body types and sizes, it is not for everyone. If you have a serious illness (such as HIV/AIDS, Lupus, cancer, etc…), extremely sensitive skin, or bone loss (osteoporosis), you should opt to go with a more traditional type of massage or energy work.

Hot Stone

Hot Stone therapy is an intensely relaxing massage in which warm stones are placed at specific sites on the body to help open up the body’s energy meridians (energy pathways). Then, as an extension of their own hands and energy fields, the therapist uses stones to warm muscle tissue allowing for gentler and deeper manipulation of the tissue.

For those suffering from circulatory issues this massage comes highly recommended.

Prenatal

Relaxing and rejuvenating this massage focuses on revitalizing the body and alleviating aches and pains associated with pregnancy. Also, includes guided imagery upon request. This massage will help the expecting mother to rid her body of excess swelling, improve her ability to move and bend, help with back pain and all her other aches. Our special clients are treated to their massage starting in a reclined pose. A small towel is placed under the right hip to shift the baby weight off the vena cava ( blood vessel responsible for blood return to the heart). The massage begins with head, neck and shoulders. After the arms and legs, the client is placed in a sideline pose (to the right and then the left) with a pillow to support the head and one in between the knees. The client will finish the massage, as she started, in the reclined pose. Remember your baby experiences the same emotions, stress and stress relief that you do. So, treat you and yours to a relaxing and soothing massage today!

Therapeutic

Occasionally we all suffer minor injuries (explained or unexplained) to our muscles, tendons and ligaments.  In these cases a careful evaluation of the body and the particular complaint is required before proceeding with massage or other restorative techniques. This service is designed for those in mind with specific complaints or issues.  Initial visits require more time and are limited to 60 or 90 minute sessions as determined by your therapist.

Deep Tissue

This massage eases into the deeper levels of tight, sore muscles, relaxing tissue and easing pain by using techniques designed to first release the fascia (a structure of connective tissue that surrounds muscles, groups of muscles, blood vessels, and nerves, binding some structures together, while permitting others to slide smoothly over each other) allowing bound up muscles to return to their normal resting lengths and positions.

Orthopedic

Orthopedic Massage (OM) is a system or protocol of various tried and tested massage techniques designed to identify, treat, and restore functional and structural balance to the body.   OM utilizes techniques from many different body work disciplines and focuses on the origin of dysfunction in efforts to restore, rehabilitate, and prevent further dysfunction.  This form of therapy relies not only on the skill of the therapist, but also the patient’s “follow through” commitment to restore and maintain balance.

Orthopedic Massage addresses dysfunctions arising from trauma-induced injuries such as sports injuries, surgical injuries and dysfunctional scar tissue.  It also identifies and corrects postural imbalances due poor ergonomic office conditions, repetitive motion patterns and chronic pain that can all affect activities of daily living.

Orthopedic Massage can be used to identify and correct conditions such as:

• Sciatica • Back spasms / pain • Carpal tunnel

• Tennis / golpher’s elbow

• Whiplash injuries • Scoliosis • SI joint

• Iliac dysfunction • Plantar fasciitis / foot pain

• Compressed disks • Lumbosacral dysfunction

• Cervical pain • Anterior leg pain

• Bursitis • Forward head postures

• Rotator cuff injuries • Iliotibial band (ITB) issues

• Tendinosis • Dowager's Humps

• Frozen shoulder / hip • Condromalacia patella

• Minor muscle / tendon repair • Scar tissue issues

• Knee pain • and much more!

Who needs Orthopedic Massage?

Almost everyone can benefit from intelligent and intuitive massage. Especially, those living with chronic discomfort or pain related to repetitive motions, poor work habits or posture, physically demanding jobs, or long periods of immobility. OM protocols are also very effective in resolving old chronic injuries diagnosed or otherwise.

What is involved in a typical Orthopedic Massage session?

Each session uses techniques that will allow you to obtain immediate and long-lasting results in even the most challenging and complicated conditions.  An OM session involves a functional assessment based on client history and range of motion, followed by gentle; pain free, manipulation and movement of soft tissue and/or unique and specialized joint mobilization techniques. Sessions may include myofascial release, scar tissue realignment/mobilization and neuromuscular re-education techniques.  Most sessions end with a client specific, home care stretching and/or strengthening protocol. Clients will be in shorts and/or a sports bra/tube top, or are draped with only the area of the body that is being treated.

How long is an OM and how many will I need?

Most initial sessions last anywhere from 75 to 90 minutes. How many sessions necessary can only be determined after the first session. Everyone is different and is treated so. Your history, functional movement, muscle-firing order, strength, posture, gait as well as your symptoms are all considered to provide you with exactly what your body needs.  One session is usually not enough to permanently release deeply rooted patterns but generally enough to gain reduced or complete pain free movement and improved range of motion.    As mentioned before, this protocol relies not only on the skill of the therapist, but also the willingness and commitment of the client for self care.

Reiki for Pets and People

Energy flows through all living things and directly affects the quality of a person’s health. When your life energy is low, it is harder to cope with stress; your sleep may be disturbed, and you are more susceptible to illness. When your life energy is strong, you feel resilient, can effectively deal with stress, and are less likely to get sick. Reiki is a technique that enhances a person’s life energy.  During a session, Reiki is administered while you lie fully clothed on a massage table.  A session typically lasts for 60 minutes.  The Reiki practitioner places her hands at locations around the head and shoulders, the abdomen and on the legs and feet. Direct touch is not necessary. The practitioner’s hands are simply held at each location slightly hovering above the body. Reiki energy flows from the practitioner’s hands and into the client’s body and energy field producing a relaxed state of mind and well-being.

A Reiki session feels like gentle glowing warmth that surrounds and fills the client and enhances feelings of relaxation, peace and well-being that promote healing. Reiki energy allows muscles to relax and increases blood flow, which promotes the healing process. Clients often report help with stress, insomnia, headaches, and other minor conditions. Reiki also promotes psychological healing, including release of anger, worry, fear, sadness and other unhealthy feelings, and replaces them with self-worth, self-assurance and well-being.

Your pet has come into your life for a reason. Whether you picked your pet from a breeder or adopted your pet from a rescue, you are on a journey together to 'help' and 'heal' each other.  Reiki can facilitate the healing for each of you in a supportive and gentle manner.  Traditionally, Reiki practitioners approach an imbalance in a pet or a person individually, focusing on the person's and the animal’s well-being separately.  We take a unique approach to animal and human Reiki sessions because we recognize that pets are members of the family; when one member of the family unit is out of balance, all family members are affected.  As a result, the pet will often mirror issues that are causing an imbalance in their person’s energy system because the bond is so very strong between the pet and pet parent.

When you schedule a People and Pet Reiki session at New Life, you will lie on a massage table and receive Reiki healing energy through the hands of the practitioner and in this unique session, you and your pet will receive the healing effects of Reiki simultaneously. Our motto is 'Heal one. Heal the other'.    The presence of your pet is welcome but not required.

Yoga

Yoga Basics

Yoga Basics is a class designed to help practitioners learn the fundamental elements of a yoga practice. Each class will focus on the basics of yoga. Each class will include breath work, proper alignment, how to use props and more. Yoga Basics is a recommended class for beginner's and more advanced students, helping to not only decrease the risk of injuries but also help guide students into a more refined and fundamentally sound practice.

Beginner/Advanced

Alignment Focused Yoga

This class, focuses on preforming yoga postures (asanas) correctly.  Postures(asanas) are taught individually with attention to detail and alignment and are customized to all levels from beginner to advanced with the use of props such as blocks, straps and chairs. This method allows you to grow in your practice at a rate that is unique to you, gradually moving from simple to complex poses allowing development of mind, body, and spirit, step by step. This class may stand alone in your yoga practice or be taken as a supplement to vigorous flow classes in order to gain in-depth knowledge of each asana and experience them at a deeper level than a flow class typically allows.

Yoga Basics/Yoga Nidra

This class is great for beginners as well as advanced students to get acquainted with yoga.   Students practice proper alignment in a relaxed, non-competitive setting. This class will help you learn yogic fundamentals and develop a solid yoga foundation with attention to breath and awareness.  The first half of class is to prepare the body for a meditation technique called  Yoga Nidra, which means Yogic Sleep.  Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation practice and no previous meditation experience is necessary to benefit from the profound relaxation achieved in a Yoga Nidra session.   The practice releases tension -- physical, mental and emotional, and opens the body and mind for healing.   The meditation is practiced laying down, and while the studio provides blankets for comfort, an eye pillow or washcloth to cover the eyes and a pillow or cushion is always welcomed.

Powerful Yoga Flow

Movement and Meditation

Start your day off right with a gentle flow yoga practice followed by a mediation to clear the mind and welcome the challenges of the day with peace and clarity.  This class is suitable for beginners to advanced yogis with little or no meditation experience needed. We will move the body gently through basic yoga poses with attention to breath and alignment to prepare for a seated meditation anywhere from 10 - 20 minutes at the end of class.   We will explore different meditation techniques to provide a foundation for building a home practice.

Yoga Flow

A vigorous vinyasa form of hatha yoga, this class connects movement with breath offering a great aerobic as well as a strengthening practice. Class will begin with a series of sun salutations and move to more challenging combinations of core postures with a strong Ashtanga influence. You will build upper body strength that will support arm balances and inversions.

Modifications and hands on assistance provided make this class appropriate for a yogi that is ready to move beyond basics. If you are a seasoned athlete, this class will complement your physical health providing better balance and flexibility while increasing joint mobility and strength.

You will enjoy the eclectic music, encouragement and variety of instruction as well as learn how amazing and strong your body really is! Expect to leave class with a quieted mind, an inner "self" awakening and relieved from daily stress.

Yoga Flow is a fitness-based approach to Vinyasa style flow. Students will focus on linking conscious breath with a vigorous and mindful flow. You can expect a mild cardiovascular and strength building workout combined with breath work. During savasana, a short head and neck massage with aromatherapy lotion is given.

* As a general rule, students should have a background

in yoga or have had at least 5 Yoga Basic classes.

Hands -on assistance will be provided to help allow

your body to fully open up and feel each asana

   throughout the whole body.

Meditation

What is meditation?

Is meditation something I need or want in my life?

Our goal at New Life Massage & Whole Living Solutions is to help you answer these questions for yourself.  Below is a brief description of different meditation categories we believe will help you understand the varied forms of meditation better and decide if you want to incorporate meditation into your healthy lifestyle.

There are a variety of forms and interpretations of meditation, however, these four categories seem to catch many of them.  While there are many forms of meditation steeped in mysticism with religious implications, it is the purpose of New Life Massage & Whole Living Solutions to present meditation solely for reducing stress, calming the mind, body and spirit for the purpose of health and well-being.

According to the Institute of Noetic Sciences there are four basic types of western meditation:

Concentrative Meditation – meditation practices in which a single object is selected such as a sound, image, or the breath.  Through the practice of focusing on the object, the mind develops the capacity to remain calm, stabilized, and grounded.

In the West this form of meditation is best known as Transcendental Meditation.

Open Awareness – meditation practices that focus on the present.  Without the focus of a specific object, but rather on the present happenings around the person, the mind opens to whatever presents itself. The experience is compared to an awareness of a spacious sky or a flowing river.  The benefit of this type of practice is to develop calm openness to whatever arises in our lives.

In the West, this form of meditation is best known a Zen meditation.

Mindfulness – meditation practices closely associated with the Buddhist practice of  Vipassana (insight meditation).  Many cultures have a form of this contemplative mediation which is a combination of Concentrative and Open Awareness meditation.  Mindfulness meditation also uses a single object of focus but has a more broad awareness of surroundings.  For this reason, this form of meditation lends itself to practice while performing such activities as eating, driving, housework, and driving.  The benefit of this form of meditation is to develop evenness of mind  and clarity of perception during stressful situations.

Guided Meditation – meditation practices in which auditory guidance from the instructor help to produces positive images, affirmations, states of being (such as peacefulness), or imagined desired experiences. This form of meditation is very popular in the West to encourage health and well-being and to rehearse successful outcomes of procedures, such as surgery, chemotherapy or an athletic performance.

(All forms of meditation can be guided, and many are often practiced with recorded or in-person guidance at first, and then later with decreasing need for explicit guidance.)
